"We Lit" (2016) by Red
For decades the Black family dynamic has been systematically attacked through covert and overt actions by conscious racists and unconscious role players who support the intentions of the former. Positive images of black families are hard to find in the media - even more challenging to find are images of resilience, grit, and perseverance that are necessary to maintain relationships. Images such as “We Lit”, on many levels are open to interpretation as to what it means, and on one level stand as triggers to suggest the simple idea of maintaining our families - mom, dad, and children, all in one household - which is often rarely the case in the Black community due to various sociopolitical initiatives to corrupt the black family structure.
